Redefine your patio in style with either wicker outdoor furniture or teak furniture. Both are natural materials and both add flavor and charm to patios and backyards with just a few elegant pieces. A patio should literally feel like an extension of the home's interior and more sophisticated homeowners, usually enjoy more sophisticated furnishings made of wood as opposed to plastic or aluminum. As warmer months approach, so do plans for backyard barbecues and other outdoor home activities. When shopping for outdoor living furniture, there are a few guidelines that will help you choose the right pieces for your budget and lifestyle.

Wood furnishings are perfect for outdoor spaces because they are durable and can last for years with very little maintenance. There is a difference, however, between how much harsh weather softwoods can endure in relation to hardwood furnishings, but both are suitable for outside entertaining and should be considered by anyone seeking to redesign a patio or yard. Be advised that unprocessed wood of any kind, when moistened, can rot or begin to mold. Therefore, outdoor furnishings made of wood should be carefully selected.

Teak furniture is among the strongest and most durable for any backyard or patio setting. Teak has been used for centuries to build things like ships, doors, window frames, outdoor railings and park benches. Teak furniture naturally repels pesky and damaging insects, which further makes it an outstanding choice for outdoor environments. The natural oil in teak protects it even further and it only requires a very light film of protection to preserve it for many years. A major drawback to purchasing teak furniture is that it is generally more expensive that softwood furnishings. However, since teak lasts for ten years or more with very little maintenance required, most still consider it a good investment overall.

Wicker outdoor furniture is just as beautiful, but far less expensive and less durable than teak or other hardwoods. Rattan furniture is still a stylish choice, however, and many who enjoy a natural look also enjoy the intricate weaving offered in wicker outdoor furniture and its naturally low maintenance. Wicker furnishings are also a better choice for the environment as it is woven from rattan, cane and other natural materials that grow rather quickly and in abundance.

Wicker furniture is very easy to care for as a gentle wiping periodically keeps dust and dirt from building up between the tight weave. Though not as durable as hardwood furnishings, wicker designs are inexpensive and easy to replace should a chair or other piece of furnishing wear out.

Redefining a backyard takes careful thought and planning. Once quality wood furnishings are selected, however, they last a lot longer than their plastic or aluminum counterparts. Without unmatched style, wood furnishings can transform a bare backyard into an enchanting oasis. When paired with the right colored cushions and accessories, teak furniture and outdoor wicker furniture can be vibrant additions. Though the need to replace wood furnishings doesn't happen often, changing the color schemes of padding and accessories makes for easy redecorating without needing to replace heavy outdoor furnishings.
